Be Present: Easier said than done, we know, but most of our fears involve being mentally stuck in the past or future.  What would it be like to instead really experience what’s happening around and within you?  One of our favorite tools to bring us back to NOW is the 5-4-3-2-1 exercise. Try it out when you notice your mind is racing and see if it helps you bring you back to yourself.

5: Acknowledge 5 things you can see

4: Acknowledge 4 things you can touch

3: Acknowledge 3 things you can hear

2: Acknowledge 2 things you smell

1: Acknowledge 1 thing you can taste

Cultivate Self-Compassion: For many of us, life as we knew it 3 months ago is over.  Our routines, jobs, and home life are all different. Instead of beating ourselves up over what we’re not doing, accomplishing or able to control, can we meet ourselves and our efforts with compassion and kindness?  Dr. Kristin Neff explains self-compassion in 3 steps:

  1. Mindfulness: Recognize when you’re suffering or stressed without being judgemental or overreacting.

  2. Self-Kindness: Just as it sounds, be supportive and understanding with yourself when you’re struggling instead of being harsh or critical.

  3. Common Humanity: Remember that everyone makes mistakes and feels down sometimes.  This is what makes us human!  We are not alone in our suffering.

Practicing self-compassion on a regular basis not only supports you, but allows you to be more patient and compassionate with others around you. What a powerful skill to have, especially during this time of uncertainty and stress.

We are so grateful for the tools we’ve collected through the practice of yoga over the years. Being able to come back to these for extra support right now, and any time that life is challenging, is invaluable. It is also our absolute favorite thing to be able to share them with others in hopes of making the trials of life a little easier. Who are the Yogi Sisters?

We’re best friends, yogis, and business partners, Isabel Allen and Galen Torrey Fairbanks.  We created Yogi Sister Retreats in Spring of 2019 after answering the questions, “why not now?” and “why not us?!”.  Together we hope to create meaningful experiences that connect and empower people to live a mindful, intentional, and joyful life.  Our next offering is our Rest & Restore virtual retreat on May 29th-31st and we’d love to have you join us!
